Our comprehensive questionnaire was crafted to elicit valuable insights from individuals occupying diverse roles within the EU Voice/Video pilot project. Recognising the varying responsibilities and perspectives inherent in these roles, the questionnaire was tailored to the specific role(s) of the interviewee. We anticipated interviewing three primary types of individuals:

Server Admins – responsible for technical infrastructure, moderation, and governance.

Users and Social Media Managers – responsible for communication strategies and audience engagement.

Bureaucrats – involved in the project management, funding, and regulatory aspects of the pilot project.

Some interviewees assumed multiple roles, while others held more specialised responsibilities. To ensure the most relevant information was collected, each individual was subjected to questions tailored to their specific role. Nevertheless, all interviewees underwent a standardised introduction section, and the subsequent sections of the questionnaire were contingent upon the roles or combinations of roles they held.

To ensure data privacy, we implemented a ‘Declaration of Consent’ that stipulated anonymization of all data obtained after collection...Read More

Status Report 1/3: “Mapping the Landscape on Fediverse Use in Public Administration”

Hereby FediVariety proudly presents you in 3 blog posts the actual status of our research project regarding the integration of the Fediverse in the EU administration, based on the EDPS pilot project "EU Voice-Video". Presentation of the preliminary report is to be foreseen in selected theaters only. Stay tuned for further updates!

For the initial research task (1 of 3), we successfully mapped Fediverse adoption within the European Union public administration. We navigated European institutions and utilised the EU regulation (EC) No 1049/2001 (which specifies that citizens can request access to existing documents) to request information from 21 bodies and receive 136 relevant documents from 9 institutions, including meeting minutes, email communication, and strategy papers. This allowed us to clearly map the interactions of stakeholders in the EDPS pilot project “EU Voice-Video”.

Our methodology involved identifying interview candidates, preparing guides, and initiating requests. While we aimed for broad coverage using snowball sampling, many interviewees preferred anonymity. We utilised the asktheeu.org platform to reach additional institutions, encountering varying levels of responsiveness and identity verification requirements.

Ultimately, we analysed the received documents to identify key actors and employed open source tools such as Monica CMS for contact management, Mattermost for internal communication, and CryptPad for collaborative work. This all provided us with the foundations for our next task; “In-depth Interviews” in order to be suitable for qualitative coding and analysis...Read More

Following FOSDEM/OFFDEM, part of our FediVariety team participated in a three-day workshop focused on encryption and advocacy in the EU and globally. The workshop aimed to enhance the knowledge and advocacy skills of civil society and non-profit organizations working on this critical issue.

Sessions covered communication strategies, methods and techniques, including brainstorming on effective encryption advocacy campaigns and discussions on building relationships with current and former members of the European Parliament.

Participants explored the multifaceted nature of encryption, considering its impact on a range of areas, including human rights, digital rights, civil rights, journalistic freedom, violence prevention (including gender-based violence), LGBTQ+ rights, Roma rights, litigation, and digital literacy. We also developed strategies for public communication on this complex issue.

It was once again a very pleasant encounter with a passionate and engaged group of people! Thanks to Internet Society for the excellent organization! Hope to meet you all again soon.

https://www.globalencryption.org
https://www.internetsociety.org
