Juggling the fediverse
FediVariety is a European collective of digital activists and researchers dedicated to promoting Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) for public administration, with an emphasis on the Fediverse.
Our name, FediVariety, is a fusion of “Fediverse” and “Variety”, reflecting the diverse range of open-source social media platforms that make up this interconnected network. And besides this; it's all of course a fantastic circus! ;)

The Fediverse
The Fediverse, unlike traditional centralized platforms, gives users control over their data and experiences.
Offering options from microblogging and image sharing to forums and gaming, it resembles a digital circus, where each user is a performer and every platform serves as a stage.
Our objectives
Our mission is to champion open-source solutions in public communication. By advocating for transparency and accessibility, we aim to liberate government services from proprietary platforms and exploitative algorithms.
We envision a future where open-source alternatives are widely adopted, ensuring that official communications are readily accessible and free for everyone.
Our commitment to these principles will foster inclusivity and empower citizens to engage effectively with their government.
Our "EU Voice-Video" Case Study
This study, funded by the NLnet Foundation, investigates the potential integration of the Fediverse into public administration, offering valuable insights for public entities considering its adoption. By analyzing the European Data Protection Supervisor's (EDPS) experiences with the "EU Voice-Video" pilot project, we aim to illuminate both the challenges and benefits of decentralized social media solutions. Publication is foreseen this autumn.
"Nodes On A Web" —The unconference [upcoming!]
We're excited to announce that we are organizing an UnConference titled "Nodes On A Web," focussed on “The Fediverse in/for Public Institutions.” This event is scheduled for early 2026, with dates to be announced soon.
This unconference aims to kickstart cross-country collaboration and community building among stakeholders, including public institutions, civic societies, and FOSS developers.
Expect 1.5 days of insightful discussions in a welcoming atmosphere. Join a diverse group of participants eager to explore, learn, and share unique perspectives.
